Swami Sri Yukteswar Giri (1855 - 1936) was an Indian monk, yogi, master of Kriya Yoga and a scholar of the Bhagavad Gita and the Upanishads.
In 1884, he became a disciple of Lahiri Mahasaya and attained the spiritual stature of Jnanavatar (incarnation of wisdom). After the death of his wife, Priya Nath Karar (his birth name) he became a Swami and received his monastic name - Sri Yukteswar Giri.
As a guru, Yukteswar had two ashrams, one in Serampore and the other in Puri, between which he alternated his residence throughout the year while training disciples.
During the last years of his life, he appointed his disciple Paramhansa Yogananda as the sole heir to all the properties of his ashrams.
In the introduction to his famous book “The Holy Science”, Yukteswar wrote: “The object of this book is to show as clearly as possible that there is an essential unity in all religions; that there is no difference in the truths indicated by the various religions; that there is but one method by which the world, both external and internal, has evolved; and that there is but one goal admitted by all the scriptures.”
